Grant awarded for new school in Bihar, India

Poorest children getting their first education from a KIRF Bodhgaya Educational CentreKIRF Bodhgaya has generously received a $5,000 grant from The Capital Group Companies Charitable Foundation based in Los Angeles, Califorania. This grant will pay for the construction of a new KIRF educational center in Bihar, India. Bihar is the poorest state in India where farm workers make about 55¢ a day (20 Indian rupees) according to Diane Kirwin. The new educational center will be the first school available to the poorest children in the area.

KIRF Bodhgaya's plans to build the new school began after receiving the generous support from a private donor in Bermuda who wanted to build a school in Bihar, India. KIRF Bodhgaya must raise approximately $20,000 more to purchase a parcel of land in a safe and hospitable place and for the construction of the school. The future facility and land will service 9 villages and serve 4 major purposes: educational facility, community center, medical clinic and community orchard.  The facility will be the first of its kind in this rural area.

Currently KIRF Bodhgaya operates three educational centers in Bodhgaya which serve 450 children. The success of these related projects, local community involvment and donor support is what has inspired us to build a permanent facility.

Health examinations for these children are often the only health care they get. Immunization rates in Bihar had fallen below 15% according to a 2005 UNICEF report. The infant mortality rate is still high (63 out of 1,000 births average for the entire country). Children in India continue to lose their life to vaccine-preventable diseases such as measles, which remains the biggest killer according to UNICEF.

Educational Facility

Happy Boy getting his first educationThe first and foremost function of the facility will be as a school.  The presence of a permanent structure for the villagers has significant symbolic and practical meaning.  Many of the children live in shacks constructed of scrap wood and plastics.  The children currently attend primary school classes in a temporary structure without furniture, water or electricity and that leaves them exposed to the elements where they study on a dirt floor.

The new school building will feature electricity for fans and lighting, enabling students to study for more hours each day.  We will purchase desks, chairs and blackboards to facilitate the learning process.  The children will be given instruction on reading and writing in both English and Hindi along with math, science and social studies classes.  They will also be taught basic hygiene.

Medical Clinic and Community Center

As a medical facility the structure allows for periodic visits from private as well as government doctors.  Vaccination projects are run from here as well as a periodic acute care clinic.  By bringing the villagers to a central location, we are able to get attention from doctors who from doctors in near by areas who volunteer their service.  In many instances, the medical clinic days are the only access to health care that the villagers are able to receive.  We have helped facilitate medical treatment for children who have suffered from afflictions like cleft lip, club feet, heart defects and other serious medical ailments.

Village festivities like weddings, religious ceremonies and town hall meetings will also be encouraged to take place at the facility.  The presence and availability of a permanent facility is seen as a major boon to the people of Bodhigaya and has a profound psychological effect giving the local population a sense of belonging and purpose.

Community Orchard

The land that we purchase will be used to plant fruit orchards and vegetable gardens.  The intent will be to teach sustainable agricultural processes to the villagers and provide food for the school children and others in the village.  To begin we will plant mango, papaya and plum trees as well as bamboo for shade.  By helping to create a bond between the land and the people we hope to encourage the villagers to plant nourishing crops on their own when they do have land available.  Each pupil of the school will be given the responsibility of tending 2 trees.

Collaboration with other Organizations

In addition to IHC, KIRF works in collaboration with the Root Institute for the medical treatment of villagers.  Our staff routinely facilitates the transportation of doctors, medical supplies and patients to and from the villages.

Project Timetable

The Project Timetable will run from December 2006-December 2007.  It is possible that the school and health clinic will be completed prior to the end of 2007.  However, construction slows during the hot months and monsoon seasons.
Currently KIRF Bodhgaya operates three educational facilities in Bodhgaya which serve 450 children. The success of these related projects is what has inspired us to build another permanent facility.

Founder of KIRF bodhgaya: Diane L. Kirwin
Diane Kirwin and friend in Bihar, IndiaKIRF's local partner in India is the Kirwin International Relief Foundation Bodhgaya Indian Charitable Trust (or KIRF Bodhgaya for short). KIRF Bodhgaya is a charitable trust established by Diane L. Kirwin, LCSWII. She is also the mother of KIRF founder Mark Kirwin and is an inspiration for many of KIRF's humanitarian projects. KIRF Bodhgaya is a registered Indian non-profit with a board of trustees comprised of local Indians and a permanent office in Bodhgaya.

Diane has been involved with helping the the poorest people (members of the dhalit or Untouchables caste) in the state of Bihar in northern India since 2002. Through her fundraising and passionate support of these resiliant people she has been able build and open the first school available to these children in the area through a non-profit called "Privilege-Sharing" in 2004. Since then she has has sponsored many sugeries to correct birth defects caused by chronic malnutrition like cleft lip and club foot and treatment for emergency care. She has brought over school supplies, school uniforms, donated medical supplies, educational toys, blankets and warm clothing donated by Patagonia. In 2005 she formed the non-profit KIRF Bodhgaya with a board of Indian trustees.

KIRF Bodhgaya is currently supporting more informal schools in remote villages and, so far, Kirwin International Relief Foundation Educational Centers serve approximately 450 children. Funds are being raised for the construction of a new educational center in a remote and impoverished rural area next year.

These schools provide academic education as well as health services, a food program and family planning for the older students in an environment of love and dignity. KIRF Bodhgaya continues to sponsor promising and needy students as well offer to pay for emergency medical care and surgeries.

To support education for children who have no other schooling available to them other than at a KIRF Educational Center and to become a School Sponsor please make an online donation of $50 or more to KIRF Bodhgaya by clicking here.
